99/100 James Suckling
Tasting on 10 April 2024: ‘Pour yourself a glass of this wine and spend an hour discovering how it opens up in stages. First the nose is incredibly pungent and dangerously vibrant, but with great savoury complexity. Then notes of dried cherries, candied oranges and hints of bitter chocolate appear. And just when you think it's all over, a spicy, balsamic character unfolds. The very concentrated, medium to full-bodied palate has incredible energy and purity, and the huge tannins are surprisingly delicate. The mineral finish is almost endless. A blend of Counoise, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre grapes, with 10% white grapes, including a majority of Clairette, all grown biodynamically. 100% whole bunches, 90-day maceration, then matured for three years in old oak barrels. To drink or to keep.
When to drink this wine : 2025-2035+.

A word from the estate:
"This wine is a tribute to our ancestor Paul Martin, who was one of the first French winemakers to sell his wine in bottles in the 18th century under the name of "Vin de la Solitude". We have reissued the four original "Vin de la Solitude" labels for this wine. This wine is made according to the rules of wine making in the 18th century. Our research has shown that the blends were very different, where the Grenache grape did not dominate. The wines were composed of a large number of co-fermented grape varieties. Macerations were longer than they are today."
- Blend: 30% Counoise, 25% Grenache noir centenaire, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre, 5% Clairette, 5% Bourboulenc, 5% Roussanne, Clairette rose, Grenache blanc.
- Agriculture : sustainable
- Vinification : All grapes are co-fermented and vinified in whole bunches. This wine is vinified in truncated wooden vats.
- Each grape variety is harvested at its own maturity, the first variety being Syrah, harvested in early September, and the last being Counoise, harvested in early October.
- The alcoholic fermentation is very long.
- Tasting notes: Elegant and refined wine, tannic yet fresh. Floral nose with small black fruits and spices. Blackcurrant aromas on the palate, with subtle tannins and great length.
