- Cellaring: 2023 - 2057
- By Lisa Perrotti-Brown on 16th march 2020 : "2017 Haut-Brion sashays gracefully out of the glass with fragrant notions of black raspberries, kirsch, dark chocolate, star anise and candied violets with a core of warm red and black currants and a touch of pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied, the palate bursts with red and black fruit layers, superbly supported by firm, ripe, finely grained tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing very long and mineral laced."
TERROIR
The 2017 Haut-Brion is a blend of 53% Merlot, 6.3% Cabernet Franc and 40.7% Cabernet Sauvignon.
A warm and sunny spring accelerated the rate of vine growth, which began on 13 March. Two bouts of frost at the end of April reminded the winegrowers how fragile their art is and how indomitable nature is. The water deficit was a key factor in the vintage, reaching 50% in July and August. However, the significant rainfall in June protected the plant from this drought. Above average sunshine, very hot days (29 days over 30°C), tempered by cool nights (allowing the vines to ripen without stress) were the other favourable factors of the year. The month of September - apart from the second week, when the hoped-for rains allowed the Cabernets to finish their cycle peacefully - favoured the harvest, which was carried out in very good conditions. The capricious nature of 2017 was finally incredibly generous, which means that this vintage has all the qualities to become a reference vintage.
SERVICE
Château Haut Brion is best served at 15°C. For wines that have not been aged in barrels, decanting is not necessary. Aeration in a carafe is recommended when the wine is young and has been aged in oak barrels. For older wines, it is preferable to decant them for a few hours before serving them. The time to open in advance will be determined at the time of tasting, depending on how the wine evolves in the glass. When decanting, be careful not to drop the deposit in the decanter, it is never pleasant to have small pieces in the mouth when tasting.
