RATING : 98-100/100 Parker - A "stunning" vintage.
- Cellaring: 2029 - 2064
- By Lisa Perrotti-Brown on May 20, 2021: "Opaque black purple in colour, we find an initial wave of vibrant black raspberry, blackberry, followed by a powerful core of warm cassis, dark chocolate, and violets, before bursting into a range of crushed stone, iron ore, tree bark, and black truffle notes. The concentrated, dense, full-bodied palate is not at all heavy, offering a refreshing backbone of red berry and dried herb suggestions, framed by seamless acidity and very fine-grained tannins, finishing on a perfumed earth note of epic length. Simply stunning."
TERROIR
The 2020 Haut-Brion is a blend of 42.8% Merlot, 39.7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17.5% Cabernet Franc, harvested from 7-29 September, with an estimated 15% alcohol and a pH of 3.8.
The winter of 2019/2020 is mild and wet. Vegetation started very early (it was the earliest year after 1989). In spring, the regular rainfall was favourable to mildew, so we redoubled our attention. The flowering, which was very early, proceeded normally. From mid-June until mid-August, an exceptionally hot and dry period set in, during which we noted three heat waves. As a result, we reduced our interventions, in particular leaf removal, to preserve the integrity of the bunches and the aromatic freshness. From 11 August, regular rainfall allowed the grapes to perfect their maturity. Temperatures were higher than normal for the season, perfect for completing the ripening of all the red grape varieties, which returned to our vats in very good sanitary conditions.
SERVICE
Château Haut Brion is best served at 15°C. For wines that have not been aged in barrels, decanting is not necessary. Aeration in a carafe is recommended when the wine is young and has been aged in oak barrels. For older wines, it is preferable to decant them for a few hours before serving them. The time to open in advance will be determined at the time of tasting, depending on how the wine evolves in the glass. When decanting, be careful not to drop the deposit in the decanter, it is never pleasant to have small pieces in the mouth when tasting.
THE 2020 VINTAGE OF CHÂTEAU HAUT-BRION
Elegant and complex, the red wine of Château Haut-Brion is very mineral and of a rare complexity, it is distinguished by an astonishing length, this aromatic persistence being the privilege of the very great origins.
