Alión 2017 - Vega Sicilia
Ribera del Duero - Vega Sicilia
94/100 Parker
Cellaring : 2021 - 2026
Tasting by Luis Gutiérrez on 30 June 2021: "The 2017 Alión, the only wine made here, comes from a difficult year marked by a spring frost and a hot, dry end to the season, so they reduced the amount of new oak by 8%. It was fermented with indigenous yeasts, and 10% of the volume was aged in concrete, completely unwooded. The change in oak regime contributed to the style of the vintage, which was marked by the frost that affected part of Alión's vineyards. In addition, the end of the season was hot and dry, and they had to work to control ripeness and power and perhaps the possibility of more aggressive tannins. This is a classic Alión, with developed aromas, juicy and round but not heavy, with just a hint of earthy rusticity. With time, it develops more balsamic notes and hints of liquorice. 230,032 bottles, 704 magnums, 614 double magnums and a handful of larger sizes were produced. It was bottled in June 2019."

A pioneering, independent and current fruit of the evolution of a famous family of great wines.
Recognised, distinguished and magnified by the authenticity of its temperament, Alión today symbolises a universal spirit of a vocation for the future.
Wine made from the Tinto Fino variety. It is hand-harvested in 12 kg boxes and taken immediately to the cellar for its entry into the selection tables. Fermentation is carried out in wooden vats with temperature control until a good polyphenolic extraction is achieved, which will give the generous colour and firm structure that are part of the personality of this wine. Finally, the wine is aged in barrels and cement for 12 to 14 months, depending on the characteristics of the vintage, in new Bordeaux barrels made of French oak. These barrels, from the most prestigious companies in Bordeaux, require a significant investment in oak, because, vintage after vintage, all the wine that is made at Alión will remain in new barrels that, once they have been abandoned for bottling, will not be reused by the winery.
Once the wine has been taken out of the barrels, it will remain in the quiet of the bottle for no less than 15 months, where all the primary aromas of the fruit will finish blending with the nuances that its delicate ageing in the barrel brings, resulting in a full-bodied, complex and intense wine, but one in which elegance plays a differentiating role and is a sign of the winery's identity
