Anjou Blanc 2023 - Domaine Belargus
Appellation Anjou Contrôlée
Anjou Blanc (often identified by the name of its cuvée, "Anjou Noir," or simply as the estate’s entry-level Loire offering) serves as a superb gateway into the world of Domaine Belargus. A flagship estate in the Loire Valley founded by Ivan Massonnat in Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay, Domaine Belargus has, in just a few years, established itself as an absolute benchmark for biodynamically farmed Chenin Blanc. Here are the key characteristics of this cuvée:
1. Terroir and Grape Variety: 100% Chenin Blanc. The vines are rooted in the schist soils of "Anjou Noir" (characterized by dark, slate-like rock). This subsoil naturally imparts a distinct tension and a pronounced mineral identity to the wines.
2. Style and Tasting Notes: On the nose, the wine is expressive, featuring notes of white fruits (green apple, pear) and citrus (lime, grapefruit) alongside floral touches—all underscored by a mineral, saline signature. On the palate, it is precise, taut, and thirst-quenching, while still retaining the appealing roundness and luscious fruitiness characteristic of Chenin Blanc. The finish is lively, fresh, and saline. Vinification: Typically aged in vats (stainless steel or large wooden casks, depending on the batch) to preserve the purity of the fruit and the vibrancy of the terroir, without any prominent oak influence.
3. Service and Food Pairing: Serve chilled, at approximately 10–12°C (50–54°F). A brief decanting can help the wine open up fully. Food and wine pairings: Ideal as an aperitif, it pairs wonderfully with raw or marinated fish (such as sea bream ceviche), seafood, a selection of fresh goat cheeses, or asparagus.
