Gigondas Réserve Vieilles Vignes – Domaine des Bosquets
93/100 Wine Spectator
"Richly styled and concentrated, with real power in the licorice and cherry notes, all stitched together with firm red tea tannins and a burning layer of graphite. Density and assurance are present throughout the long, drawn-out finish. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsaut. Drink now through 2035."
The purest expression of the estate, born from the finest terroirs of Gigondas.
Within the Bosquets vineyard, certain plots of old vines, aged between 50 and 100 years, produce a cuvée of character, complex and intensely expressive. This wine is not a simple blend: it is the living sum of cool, high-altitude terroirs, a mosaic of rich soils, and a unique microclimate. Each hand-harvested bunch contributes to expressing the deep identity of this emblematic estate of the southern Rhône.
Origin and Grape Varieties
This wine precisely blends the noble grape varieties of the vineyard: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and a touch of Clairette. The vines are rooted in varied soils—limestone marl up high and fine sand mid-slope—giving the cuvée its finesse and airy structure.
Meticulous Harvest & Vinification
With a yield deliberately limited to 20 hectoliters per hectare, production remains modest (30,000 bottles and a few hundred magnums), guaranteeing consistent quality. The harvest, entirely manual, takes place in October. Depending on the plot, the grapes are vinified in whole bunches or lightly crushed, with gravity-fed vats to respect the raw material.
Vinification is carried out by plot, with a gentle approach to extraction: slow infusion, manual pumping over, and long vatting periods allow the complexity of each terroir to be revealed.
Diverse and Precise Aging
The aging process lasts 18 months: initially, the wines rest separately according to their origin and grape variety, in a variety of perfectly adapted containers—tunnels for the Grenaches on sand, 228L barrels for the Syrahs, and old 400 to 600L demi-muids for the rest of the blend. After this initial phase, the blend spends a second winter in untreated concrete vats, promoting the wine's harmony and natural stability. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels.
Tasting: Precision, Freshness, and Depth
To the eye, the wine is adorned with a deep garnet color. The nose, initially floral and pure, then reveals delicate fruity notes, evoking black cherry and sweet spices. On the palate, the sensation is fluid at first, before a full and velvety texture sets in, where the Grenache asserts itself in all its nobility. The taut finish is carried by chiseled tannins, already melted but ready to linger.
Pairing and aging
Serve it between 16 and 18°C in large glasses to appreciate its full aromatic complexity. Even in its youth, it pairs wonderfully with fine meats such as herby pork tenderloin, beef Wellington, or roast pigeon. After a few years in the cellar, its structure becomes even more refined, gaining in length and subtlety—a hare à la royale would be the ideal partner.
