Jeb Dunnuck: 97-99/100
TASTING DATE 10/6/2020: "Finally, the 2019 Gigondas Hominis Fides is another wine that will flirt with perfection. Deep purple/ deep ruby with a stunning bouquet of creme de cassis, kirsch liqueur, scorched earth, and loads of violet and floral nuances; of violet and floral nuances, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, well-built tannins, no hard edges, and one hell of a finish. One hell of a finish. There's no shortage of tannins and it should be allowed to age for 4-5 years in bottle. It will be one of the longest wines of the vintage".
The winemaker tells you about it: "Very old Grenache planted on Miocene limestone sands in the place called "Hominis Fides". Whole grape harvest. Aged for twelve months: 20% in new barrels - 50% in barrels of one wine - 30% in barrels of two and three wines. My father had already identified the great potential of this place in the early 1960s. Of course, this was not a time when people were "dissecting" the ins and outs of terroirs, but one could trust the solid appreciation of an experienced winemaker. Hominis Fides has always been one of the best lieux-dits, whatever the vintage: great terroirs outperform vintages. When the long geological history meets our short history as small human winemakers, there is a kind of almost enigmatic questioning: what is the meaning behind all this? Why does this soil generated 11 million years ago by an invading sea inspire the little worms that we are on the long time scale? There is always a particular "depth" in Hominis Fides, but in a vintage like 2018, it is tinged with finesse and freshness. The tannins always achieve finesse, with consummate ease. Although this is a Grenache parcel, there are many Aramon, Alicante, Carignan and even grape varieties whose names I do not know... Our elders liked to add diversity: it helps the flowering, makes the wines more complex and "smoothes" the excesses of certain vintages. Sometimes, before going to look for knowledge very far, it is enough to try to understand what our predecessors have done and to observe what is under our nose. Rose, licorice, iodine, pepper."
Bottled without filtration.
